What are carbon credits?
Carbon credits are a form of compensation that can be traded and purchased by companies or individuals as a way to reduce their environmental impact. By committing to reducing their carbon emissions, individuals can buy carbon credits, which represent greenhouse gases sequestered from the atmosphere.
How are carbon credits different from other things I produce?
Unlike other commodities, carbon credits can be traded as a commodity and even on the stock exchange. However, the quantification and qualification standards are the same. For example, when buying soybeans, the buyer wants to know the quantity and quality, so grain companies provide information such as the weight of the sack, in addition to conducting quality tests. The same occurs with carbon credits, which, through modeling, soil samples, additionality and leakage, estimate the quality and quantity of the product.
What practices are required for me to qualify for carbon generation?
Current best practices to be adopted are:
Add cover crops (if planting cover crops for the first time, extend the crop's time in the soil, or use a mix of cover crops);
Diversify crop rotation on the property;
Reduce or eliminate plowing;
Reduce fertilizer use (reduce nitrogen or switch to injection).

When should I start the new practices to qualify for carbon generation?
Since carbon credits are sold in the year following the increase in soil carbon and the reduction in emissions, it's called a "Carbon Credit Crop." This means that the carbon for the 2021 crop is generated from adopting good practices starting sometime after the 2020 crop harvest and before the 2021 fall crop.
Why do I need to make a change to the practice? Why don't my existing practice changes count?
The two main reasons are:
Valuable carbon credits are in high demand, and buyers are only willing to purchase credits that demonstrate a change. Credits generated as a result of changes in practices are valuable because they represent new benefits for soil carbon and emission reductions, above and beyond "business as usual."
These types of valuable credits are extremely rare – that's why buyers come to Indigo and are willing to pay high prices. It's also why we can guarantee a minimum credit payment for a limited time. Previous carbon markets failed because buyers didn't see the credits as truly valuable without the requirement to change practices.
What information should I send? Do you have anything for me?
Participating in LUVE Carbon includes free access to our software platform for managing field data. On our platform, producers can map and visualize field boundaries and record and submit the field management information needed to calculate credits.
Information on management practices includes 3-5 years of historical and current seasonal details on planting and harvesting dates, fertilizer types, application amounts and dates, and soil preparation types and dates, as well as information on cover crop types, planting dates, and termination methods and organic amendments, where applicable.
How much will I receive?
Interest in agriculture-based carbon credits has accelerated in the last year, so LUVE Carbon offers you a safety net. Any field enrolled in LUVE Carbon in 2021 is guaranteed $15 per verified carbon credit; if the price changes due to demand, you will earn even more. This applies to all credits generated before the 2022 crop season.
